Background of the study
Religious festivals serve as dynamic cultural events that play a crucial role in language revitalization. In Onitsha, Igbo communities actively participate in annual religious festivals that not only celebrate faith but also reinforce the use of the Igbo language in ceremonial, social, and educational contexts (Okafor, 2023). These festivals often feature traditional songs, storytelling, and rituals that employ archaic and poetic forms of Igbo, contributing to the language’s vibrancy and continuity. As younger generations increasingly embrace modernity, such festivals offer a platform to reconnect with linguistic heritage and instill pride in cultural identity. This study explores the extent to which religious festivals contribute to the revitalization of the Igbo language in Onitsha by analyzing festival programs, participant testimonies, and language usage trends. It investigates the mechanisms through which these festivals reinforce traditional language practices and examines their role in countering language attrition (Eze, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the cultural significance of religious festivals in Onitsha, the revitalization of the Igbo language is challenged by modern influences that favor global languages. The diminished use of traditional Igbo during festivals may weaken their impact on language preservation (Okafor, 2023). This study seeks to identify the factors that hinder the full revitalization potential of these festivals and to explore strategies to enhance their role in sustaining Igbo language practices (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of religious festivals in language revitalization.
  2. To identify challenges affecting traditional language use during festivals.
  3. To propose strategies to strengthen language transmission.

Research questions:

  1. How do religious festivals influence Igbo language revitalization?
  2. What challenges limit their impact?
  3. What measures can enhance language preservation at these events?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the potential of religious festivals to revitalize the Igbo language, informing cultural and educational policymakers about effective preservation strategies (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to religious festivals in Igbo communities in Onitsha; excludes other cultural events.

Definitions of terms:

  • Religious festivals: Cultural celebrations with a spiritual focus.
  • Language revitalization: Efforts to preserve and increase the use of a language.
  • Igbo language: The language of the Igbo people.
